CHAPTER 9

“Nick Nice my man,” Gavin greeted Nicolas once he entered into his apartment, dapping him up and clasping his hand on his back in a brotherly embrace. Gavin hadn’t seen Nicolas since he was a pubescent little boy who wanted to hang out with his big sister’s boyfriend and his friends. Looking at him for the first time in years, he was thoroughly impressed at how sharp the young men grew up to be. It was after midnight yet here the man stood, in a crisp white button up shirt, tucked into a pair of black slacks that were held up by black and tan trimmed suspenders to match his tie. “It’s good to see you man, come in and make yourself comfortable.”

“Thank you G,” he smiled happily, his bright eyes beaming with acceptance as he crossed the threshold of Gavin’s living space. “I was hungry so I brought tacos and churros if you all want some as well.”

“My nigga,” Ace answered gleefully, jumping off of the couch to meet him halfway as he walked towards the living room. Taking the brown bag from his hand, he flopped down on the couch and began to dig in while Nicolas and Gavin got comfortable on the couch. “Thank you man,” Ace said through a voice that was muffled by bites of beef, lettuce, peppers, and fried tortilla shells.

“No doubt,” he acknowledged, removing his laptop bag from his shoulders and placing it on his lap while he got comfortable in the recliner across from the sofa and loveseat that Gavin and Ace sat on respectively. “The young lady won’t be joining us this evening? I brought some for her as well.”

Ace shook his head as he continued to chew.

“No,” Gavin started. “She’s home, we met with her a little earlier to go over our plans. We’ll all meet together once we get a few other things situated.”

Nicolas nodded his head in understanding.

“Ace tells me that you helped her with her recovery,” Gavin continued on, picking up one of the tacos out of the bag that Ace had been hogging for himself. “You let him set up in your place until she was able to get up and go.”

“Yeah but it was nothing though,” he remarked nonchalantly, taking a bite of a cinnamon churro as he waited for his laptop to set up. “You know Ace is my man, one hundred grand. He’s looked out for me, before and after Nat so you know; whatever he needs I got him.”

“Fo’ sho,” Ace mumbled again. “I appreciate that my nigga.”

Gavin piggybacked on Ace’s sentiment. “Definitely. As we’ve discovered recently, loyalty is extremely hard to come by, so I appreciate that quality in you,” he insisted with sincere gratitude. “So I hear you want to be a part of the crew?”

“If you all allow me to, absolutely.”

Gavin shook his head in understanding as he studied Nicolas’ demeanor. He did indeed appreciate the level of loyalty that he had towards Ace and vice versa but he also appreciated that he wasn’t all rowdy and gassed up about joining them.
